  • About Lynn Nottage
    Lynn Nottage (b. 1964) is an acclaimed American playwright and screenwriter known for her sharp, compassionate storytelling that often gives voice to marginalized and overlooked communities. She is the only woman to have won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice—first for Ruined (2009), a searing exploration of women in war-torn Congo, and again for Sweat (2017), which examines the decline of industrial America and its impact on working-class lives. Nottage’s work is celebrated for its blend of humor, humanity, and social critique, often tackling issues of race, gender, class, and resilience with both honesty and empathy. In addition to her plays, she is also a professor at Columbia University School of the Arts.

    About Poof! (1993)
    Poof! is a short one-act play by Lynn Nottage that uses humor and magical realism to explore themes of domestic abuse and liberation. The play begins when Loureen, a battered woman, discovers that her abusive husband has literally gone up in smoke after she finally talks back to him. With the help of her friend Florence, Loureen navigates the shock, guilt, and relief of suddenly being free from years of oppression. Both funny and poignant, Poof! highlights the strength of women reclaiming their independence, while also shedding light on the cycles of abuse and the importance of solidarity.

    Jennifer Lee is an Academy Award-winning screenwriter, director, and playwright, best known for writing the Disney animated films Frozen and Frozen II. In addition to her work on Frozen, Lee co-wrote the screenplay for Wreck-It Ralph and has contributed to numerous other Disney projects.     Bobby Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez are the award-winning songwriting team behind Frozen and Frozen JR., serving as composers and lyricists. Their work on Frozen earned them an Academy Award for Best Original Song (“Let It Go”) and a Grammy Award. They also wrote songs for Frozen II, Coco, and Winnie the Pooh.     About the Writers:

    Carole King
    Carole King is one of the most celebrated singer-songwriters of all time. Rising to fame in the 1960s as a songwriter with Gerry Goffin, she created chart-topping hits for artists like The Shirelles, The Drifters, and Aretha Franklin. Her landmark 1971 album Tapestry cemented her legacy, earning four Grammy Awards and selling over 25 million copies worldwide. With a career spanning decades, King’s music continues to inspire generations.

    Gerry Goffin
    Lyricist Gerry Goffin partnered with Carole King to create some of the most enduring hits of the ’60s, including “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” and “The Loco-Motion.” Known for his ability to capture the voice of a generation, Goffin wrote lyrics that were fresh, emotional, and instantly relatable. His collaborations helped shape the sound of popular music during the Brill Building era.

    Barry Mann
    Barry Mann, alongside his wife and writing partner Cynthia Weil, contributed dozens of pop classics to the American songbook. Together, they penned hits such as “On Broadway” and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” which became one of the most performed songs of the 20th century. Mann’s melodies defined an era and influenced countless songwriters who followed.

    Cynthia Weil
    Cynthia Weil was a trailblazing lyricist whose poetic and socially conscious words gave depth to the pop charts. With Barry Mann, she crafted timeless songs that combined catchy hooks with meaningful storytelling. Weil was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Songwriters category in recognition of her incredible impact on music and culture.

    Douglas McGrath
    Douglas McGrath wrote the book for Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, weaving together King’s life story with her unforgettable music. A playwright, screenwriter, and director, McGrath’s work included the screenplay for Bullets Over Broadway (Academy Award nomination), and the films Emma and Nicholas Nickleby. His writing is known for its warmth, wit, and humanity.
